Screen area grows with the square of the diagonal. A 75 inch TV has 33 percent more picture area than a 65 inch TV, not 15 percent.

The standards

What viewing distance should you actually use

Two published standards bracket the answer. Stay between them and almost nobody complains.

SMPTE RP 2046-1 30 degrees The minimum horizontal viewing angle for reference viewing. Sit at 1.87 times the screen width or closer.

THX 40 degrees The cinema-like target. Sit at 1.37 times the screen width. Closer than this feels aggressive for everyday TV.

Too far back Under 20° The screen feels small and you waste detail. This is the most common mistake buyers make. Size up.

Above 50 degrees you will move your head to follow action and fast camera motion becomes tiring. Sports and gaming tolerate it better than film.

The honest version

Does 4K look sharper from your sofa

Only if you sit close enough. A person with 20/20 vision resolves detail down to about 1 arcminute. Divide screen width by horizontal pixel count and you get the pixel pitch, which sets the distance at which those pixels blend into each other.

65 inch screen 4.2 ft / 1.29 m Sit closer than this to resolve every 4K pixel. The 1080p threshold on the same screen is 8.5 ft (2.58 m).

55 inch screen 3.6 ft / 1.09 m Almost nobody sits this close to a 55 inch TV. At a typical 8 ft the 4K pixels are there, but your eyes cannot separate them.

This model covers static resolution only. HDR, contrast, upscaling and wide colour gamut are visible at any distance, and they are the real reason a modern 4K panel beats an old 1080p one. If you want more perceived detail from your existing sofa, buy a bigger screen before you buy more pixels.

Is 4K worth it on a 55 inch TV?

For pure resolution, only within 3.6 ft (1.09 m). Beyond that, 20/20 vision cannot separate individual 4K pixels on a 55 inch panel. The HDR, contrast and colour improvements in 4K sets remain visible at any distance.

How much bigger is a 75 inch TV than a 65 inch TV?

A 75 inch screen is 15 percent larger by diagonal but 33 percent larger by picture area. It is 65.4 inches wide against 56.7 inches, so it needs about 22 cm more width.

Do TV dimensions include the bezel and the stand?

No. The advertised size is the diagonal of the visible panel only. Manufacturers list full chassis dimensions separately, usually as dimensions with stand and dimensions without stand.

Between 30 and 40 degrees of horizontal field of view. Thirty degrees is the SMPTE minimum for reference viewing and 40 degrees is the THX recommendation for a cinema-like image.
